The state-owned rail ,logistics and port company has opened a 30-day window for public-sector bodies to stake a claim in a batch of non-core commercial properties, including sites in Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay.

Transnet has moved to dispose of 15 commercial properties it feels are no longer part of its core business, including assets in KuGompo City and Gqeberha that could spark an interest from Eastern Cape authorities and business circles.

The notice, published in Government Gazette No. 55242 late last month, gives government departments, state-owned companies, other public entities and the general public 30 days to lodge written expressions of interest before the properties are offered to the open market.

Among the Eastern Cape sites listed are the small business precinct known as Arcadia Park on 32 Commercial Road in KuGompo City (formerly East London), as well as a piece of land in Humewood Land in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth). The broader list also includes properties in Cape Town, Durban and other parts of the country.

The move is likely to attract attention in the Eastern Cape because the sites are in coastal areas where land use, transport links and future development are closely watched by municipalities and provincial authorities.

Transnet says any public-sector body that wants to keep a property in public hands must state the intended use or purpose and confirm that funding is available. If no formal interest is received within the 30-day period, the company says it will invite proposals from the open market.

The notice was published under section 54(2)(d) of the Public Finance Management Act, which sets out how state assets are handled.

The list of properties also includes Bellville Marshalling Yard, Umlazi Mall Megacity, Durban Station Precinct No 1, Messina Superspar, with the Carlton Centre in the Johannesburg city centre being the most recognizable asset on the list.
