Three-Way Battle for Border Athletics Presidency As October Election Looms

Full slate of nominees revealed ahead of October elections with Mthembu and Blanket, who has been nominated for three positions, challenging Pongoma for Presidency.

The race for the leadership of Border Athletics (BORA) has officially kicked off following the close of nominations on Aug 25, setting up a high-stakes election for the governance of regional athletics for the 2026–2030 term. The full list of nominees, published by BORA President Sicelo Pongoma in Circular 11 of 2026, reveals a contested contest for top board positions alongside commission portfolios ahead of the Quadrennial General Meeting (QGM) scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10, 2026, at the ECDSRAC BCM Boardroom in East London.

High-Stakes Presidential and Executive Battles

The battle for the presidency sees incumbent Sicelo Pongoma (Stutterheim AC), backed by Oxford Striders AC and Komani Runners AC, facing a challenge from Bhekisisa Mthembu (Chillies RC EL), supported by a four-club coalition including Real Gijimas AC, BCM AC, Pumpkins AC, and Chillies RC EL, as well as Keith Blanket (Inyibiba AC), who nominated himself through his home club.

The Vice-Presidency will be contested by:

  • Fezeka Nkomonye (Chillies RC EL),
  • Bonga Mabentsela (Pumpkins AC, supported by Real Gijimas AC, BCM AC, and Pumpkins AC), and
  • Keith Blanket, who picked up a cross-nomination from Komani Runners AC.

Key commission leadership seats saw strong endorsements:

Finance: Noluthando Makeleni (Overtakers SC) stands unopposed, backed by Oxford Striders AC and Komani Runners AC.

Cross Country: Zukile Mbelu (Stutterheim AC) received the nod from Komani Runners AC.

Road Running: A three-way battle features incumbent Phaphama Malusi (Hollywood AC-EL), Ayanda Mxakato (Real Gijimas AC, backed by a three-club coalition), and Keith Blanket (Inyibiba AC, backed by Inyibiba AC and Komani Runners AC).

Athletes Commission: Vuyokazi Stoto (Chillies RC-EL) was nominated by Komani Runners AC.

Track & Field and Women's Commissions: Both chairperson positions received no nominations.

Vice-Chairpersons and Commission Slates

The race for commission vice-chairpersons features a dominant showing from Sporty Pals AC:

Cross Country: Sisipho Ndyalaza (Sporty Pals AC).

Road Running: Phila Magadla (Original Mambas AC).

Track & Field: Max Kamte (Sporty Pals AC).

Athletes Commission: Kwezi Giba (BRAC), nominated via cross-club support from Hollywood AC-EL.

Women's Commission: Busisiwe Lutshete (Sporty Pals AC).

Finance Vice-Chairperson & All Additional Member Slots: There were no nominations received, leaving these posts vacant. With nominations officially closed on Aug. 25, affiliated clubs now have until Friday, Sept. 11, 2026, to file constitutional motions before delegates gather in East London to vote on Oct. 10.
